Kids Today September 13, 2012

This morning I had the opportunity to attend a chamber meeting that described all the amazing programs being offered that teach high school students real life skills.  The level of work some of them are doing is amazing. 

This leads to two interesting thoughts; one is about the school systems that need to be more in tune with the real world and application of what is being learned.  The other thought is about application to business which I’ll get to in a minute.

I realize sadly many kids are not privy to the advantages offered in some suburban districts. But I remember 10 years ago being involved in a remarkable program created by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)  LAWA knew how many new jobs they needed over the next 10-20 years and developed a curriculum to groom kids in the surrounding schools to work there starting with paid internships.  The kids had to have the grades, B- average, had to write resumes and be interviewed.  If accepted they had to model good work ethic.  The impact on kids staying in school was huge.  Then there are organizations like http://empowher.org/  that provides the tools that help girls stay in school and create a future for them.  Both programs are in city schools that lack the donations and support the suburban ones enjoy.

The kids I saw today and the ones from other programs are learning practical applications for their school work.  They are excited about learning  and being a valuable contributor to their communities.  One of the high schools realized the huge percentage of people in some aspect of food service so they have an on campus food service staffed by students learning all aspects of the industry.  Think of how that raises the level of excellence for that industry as well as providing alternative career choices.

I could go on and on about the future I see not just these kids but the level of students in my management classes at UCLA.  There is a message here for businesses.  People who see value in their work or their contribution to a community stay, and grow and bring in others who will also enable the business and community to grow. 

Today retention is a huge impact and expense on many companies what are you doing to retain your employees?  As a side note, what might you and your company do to help students stay in school and be a more valuable community member?
